Easter on the Island

Easter wouldn't be the same without a some eccentic Easter events, and the Island has its fair share for 2016.

Easter wouldn't be the same without a some eccentic Easter events, and the Island has its fair share for 2016.

A favourite event in the west Wight is the Yarmouth Easter Duck Race on Saturday 26 March where a 1000 little yellow plastic ducks are released to 'race' along the River Yar. The first four ducks to ride on the tide to the bridge are the winners and receive a prize.

At Osborne House from 25-28 March there is the opportunity to experience a range of games and pastimes that were played by children in Victorian times - so we can probably assume that plastic ducks races won't make an appearance. Meanwhile at Brading Roman Villa there is an Easter Egg Hunt as well as competitions for homemade Easter bonnets and decorated eggs. This all happens from 11am to 3pm on 28th March.

Robin Hill is running its popular Easter Egg Dash for 'families of all ages' at 12 noon on Easter Sunday and Monday. Taking part in the dash is free and most participants manage to find an egg or two, so no one should go home too disappointed!

Meanwhile on the coast Blackgang Chine will be celebrating on Easter Sunday and Monday with competitions, a treasure hunt and "lots of mayhem as two new Dodo characters are let loose in the park".

Isle of Wight Steam Up

An Easter event round-up has to include the Easter Steam Up at Mottistone Farm on March 28 from 10:00am to 4:00pm where working steam engines from across the Island gather. This has been on the Easter calendar for over 30 years and is still going strong.
