Walk the Wight

A massive 7,500 walkers took part in the Island's annual Earl Mountbatten Hospice

A massive 7,500 walkers took part in the Island's annual Earl Mountbatten Hospice 'Walk the Wight' event on Sunday 15 May across some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. The main event is the Bembridge to The Needles walk, which at 26.5 miles is the longest walk crossing the Island from the eastern tip (Bembridge) to the wester tip at The Needles.

But there were a range of other shorter walks for those taking part including an eight mile flat walk from Sandown to Shide and the four mile very scenic schools walk from Freshwater Bay to The Needles.

The weather was ideal for walking - blue skies and sunshine, but with a cool wind to ensure the walkers didn’t get too hot. The event attracts walkers of all ages, from young children to the more mature, and those with disabilities or mobility problems. As well as the may dogs who participate this year saw llamas and alpacas make an appearance.

Special congratulations must go to Natasha Lambert, an inspirational teenager who crossed the finish line despite severe restrictions due to Athetoid Cerebral Palsy.
